Shopaholic and Baby - Sophie Kinsella
I have read all of Sophie Kinsella's books and have especially loved the Shopaholic series. My favourite being The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic, which was so hilarious that its probably one of only a couple of books that I have actually read twice from cover to cover. My sister loves Shopaholic Abroad, I enjoyed this very much too. Shopaholic ties the knot is probably my least favourite in the series, I really liked it but felt Sophie wanted to tie up the story of Becky Bloomwood and wasn't as keen on carrying on the series so it seemed a bit rushed, but it was still a great read. I loved Shopaholic and Sister, a great, great book. I decided not to read Shopaholic and Baby when it first came out in print simply because I can never have children of my own so felt reading it would just add salt into the wounds. However, because I am such a fan of Sophie's books, I thought I would read it anyway and I am glad I did although not having read one of the books for a while I did get a little frustrated with Becky at the beginning of the book as she hadn't seemed to have grown up at all since the last book. However as the book unfolded, I found Becky to be as endearing, charming and even unselfish to others as ever and I really got into the story, so much so I couldn't put it down. Yes she still shopped but her actions towards others made her the person she was and also was the reason why Luke her obviously richer, more intellectual husband loved her so much. The book goes on a journey with Becky Brandon (nee Bloomwood) as she prepares for motherhood and reintroduces us to her husband Luke, best friend Suze, Becky's sweet mother and father, Becky's newly found sister, Jess and other characters we have grown to love. Becky still manages to go shopping but this time for the baby (how many prams should she buy is just one question she asks herself as she goes to a huge pram shopping outlet with Luke). Luke and Becky are looking for their dream family house, shoe room included for Becky of course but into the equation of the story comes Luke's ex girlfriend of whom he knew from his student days. Venetia is a beautiful redhead with swishy hair and great clothes and oh yes just happens to be the doctor who will deliver Becky's baby. Obviously jealousy and complications ensue and as usual chaos reigns throughout the book but of course everything comes out right in the end and one of the highlights of the novel is the hilarious chapter in the book when Becky gives birth. This book is another triumph for Sophie Kinsella and I do hope we get to hear more from Becky Brandon, I have a feeling Becky's story is set to run and run. Highly recommended to everyone who likes the Shopaholic stories or just enjoys really great chick lit.
