Triptych - Karin Slaughter
I shall be brief. I didn't like this book, and I found that rather odd. I am usually a sucker for a good crime novel, and this one has a good starting point, that is a well thought out plot. The basic premise of the novel namely the true culprit framing an innocent only to change identity and make life hell for his framed victim. The concept that we do not quite know who is who and who is good and bad is a good choice for such a plot as it truly helps to keep us guessing. The writing rather spoils the experience, however, as Ms. Slaughter jumps around in the past and present, at a pace that simply does not leave room for the character's stores to sink in. Telling the past and the present as parallel stories often works well, and I can't quite pin down why it doesn't here. Perhaps it is because Ms. Slaughter has not managed to match pace and plot to work toegther. In passages I found the pace to fast, in others too slow. And by the time I reached the last page I had never really come to know either of the characters. They only stood out as flat stereo-types. The tough ut kind-hearted police woman, the big but gentle police man, the baddie who's not really bad, and the goodie who's not good at all. That's all there was to it and it simply didn't stir anything with me. Sadly I must conclude that the book was not worth the money I paid for it.
