Thinking of You - Jill Mansell
Is sure to strike a chord with women who have found themselves confronted with the prospect of `empty-nest syndrome'. Ginny Holland, happily divorced and in her late thirties, has devoted her life to bringing up her daughter. Now that Jem is heading off to university, Ginny is terrified of becoming a lonely, embittered cat lady. In an effort to transform her life, Ginny decides to find a permanent job, rent out the spare room in her house and maybe even dip her toes into the dating game, much to the delight of her best friend, Carla, a glamorous career woman. When Ginny locks eyes with a good-looking man in a gift shop, she thinks that this is the sign she has been waiting for and her life is about to change for the better. Unfortunately, the handsome stranger thinks she is a shoplifter and the only date he has in mind for her is one involving a visit to the local police station. While her efforts to meet a suitable man seem doomed, Ginny believes she will have more success finding a flatmate. However, once again she discovers that first appearances can be deceiving. Laurel, her new lodger, turns out to be an unemployed depressive who can't stop talking about her ex-boyfriend. The only good thing about the situation is the fact that Laurel has a charming brother called Perry, who seems to be more than a little interested in Ginny. Is he the man she has been secretly waiting for all these years? Ginny's future begins to look more positive when she gets a job at the best restaurant in town. However, she quickly discovers that her new employer is the same man who accused her of shoplifting. However, Finn Penhaligon's bark is definitely worse than his bite and the uneasy truce between them becomes a comfortable working partnership. While Ginny is exploring new developments on the relationship front, her daughter Jem is falling in love for the first time. But all is not as it seems - both Ginny and Jem are about to have their hearts broken, and not just by the men in their lives. Hilarious and poignant in turns, Thinking of You is a delightful account of modern love, friendship and family life, with plenty of surprises to keep you turning the pages. Once you've finished this novel, you can always read your way through the author's impressive backlist, as each one is a gem. I would also recommend reading Tino Georgiou's masterpiece--The Fates--if you haven't read it yet.
