Four Past Midnight - Stephen King
A collection of 4 novellas by stephen king (supposedly too long for short stories and too short for novels (although 2 of the included stories are longer than the published Carrie)). a strange set of reads, all with an element of horror ('and time' the blurb says - but i never noticed this. The Langoliers - utterly perfectly crafted story, danger, exposition, deduction, problems to overcome to get to the goal, and a great climax. it the story of a airplane that suddenly loses all its passengers except those who were asleep. the story is awesome. plenty for any reader to like and enjoy, it has occult elements but also plenty of gritty realism in the situation. a great read. Secret Window - not such a fan of this. i'm pretty sure he wrote it just before writing 'The Dark Half' which has an extremely similar storyline and is much better. this story reads like the melting pot of ideas King had for that vastly superior novel. read the dark half and give this one a miss, its a bit confused, very fast paced and frantic and has some strange holes. enjoyable but far from the genius King can pull off. The Library Policeman - this one is very dull. the concept of the Library policeman is only something King could come up with and write about, because most other writers would see the absurdity of it, the unscareyness, and the boring pointlessness. the story goes nowhere for a very long time, is very convoluted, absurd and not scarey in the least. i get a bit tired of the king stories about one person's mind becoming unhinged and this is yet another. avoid. i skipped it after about halfway. The Sun Dog - this one thankfully pulls the collection up again. a spooky read for the first half - its about a camera that takes the same subtley changing photo over and over - it looses its way about halfway and is too long. at the beginning though i was geniunely creeped out and the suspense is kept. Overall, the collection is worth the price of admission for the Langoliers alone, but you also get the great Sun Dog and the passable Secret window. leave the ludicrous Library Policeman well alone. stephen King is often a master of this type of fiction but by this stage in his career the hits are getting lost in the misses. 6/10 - purely for the Langoliers and Sun Dog.
