Roasting in Hell's Kitchen: Temper Tantrums, F Words, and the Pursuit of Perfection - Gordon Ramsay
For those of us who are used to seeing Ramsay on TV, this book shows us the man behind the persona. There are however some caveats, which disappointed me. Firstly, this book was ghost written for Ramsay, I thought that a person of his personality would want to do it himself. Secondly, towards the end of the book he takes some pot-shots at some of his contemporaries. Someone of his stature and achievement should be above this, and I lost a considerable amount of respect for him because of it. I respect Ramsay as a chef (I have worked as one for thirty years) and he is an excellent cook, but as a person he depicts himself as a childish arsehole. In one place he tells us that he wants to be left alone when dropping his kids off a school & yes he is entitled to some privacy. However, if feels that way why did he go into television? Why doesn't he step out of the limelight and hand back the millions he made from it and retreat into obscurity. Also, sending a former employer in France a Christmas card with "congratulations on holding on to your two Michelin stars" (Ramsay has three) is pathetic. Like I previously stated a person of Ramsay's international success should be above this. Because of all of the above I give the book three stars, could have done better Ramsay!
