"ALIEN VOICES was formed in 1996 by actor-director Leonard Nimoy, actor John de Lancie and writer-producer Nat Segaloff to create multi-media works of science-fiction and fantasy'...'Each is an original production with riveting performances, lush music and exciting stereophonic soundscapes"...so the small synopsis describes the development of the production team behind this unusual audio offering and its content, but even this description doesn't adequately prepare the listener for the story that's to follow. This Star Trek audio book came as a complete surprise to me. Firstly, as the saying goes...'Spock VS. Q' was filmed in front of a live studio audience, all of whom (from the belly-laughs at even the most embarrassingly-obvious puns) are Trekkies, but you can't blame them- witnessing two such brilliant actors at work must have really been something. Just listening to this production...it's very easy to visualise the two actors performing on stage in front of an intimate crowd, as the two great egos duel with rapid dialogue- Spock's impassive expression and Q's derisive one, while everyone watching sits spellbound by the extraordinary spectacle.Unfortunately, while they're both extremely entertaining and their voices are full of character and warmth and wit...the dialogue just isn't sharp enough and the subject matter isn't anything new either, especially if you compare it to a novel such as 'I.Q.' by Peter David, which explored the character of Q and his observations on the universe with a great deal more creativity, subtlety and insight. Clichés, proverbs and lame puns are rolled out at an amazing rate here, as these two characters address a group of humans on the pre-text of informing them that their world is coming to an end (-Spock obviously doing his best to enlighten humanity, while Q does his utmost to thwart the efforts of his counterpart, whilst lovingly deriding our species in the process). But as it's only an hour in length, the emotive performances by the two leads largely make up for its shortcomings. So in summary...if you're after an entertaining hour exploring the Star Trek universe you won't be disappointed.
