Well, I'm not generally a huge fan of fantasy but found this book completely compelling. I'm not sure I can quite put my finger on why. At first glance it's fairly standard fantasy fare but it is written so well, the characters are great and developed nicely, as is the plot that it kept me turning page after page - something that hasn't happened for a while. Anyway, in case you were in any doubt, I loved it and on finishing immediately purchased the sequel. I recommend you do the same!
